There’s good news for organizers of fun runs and other recreation events held along state highways.
The Haines Borough has agreed to serve as a sponsor of events, in order to fulfill an insurance requirement that has diminished the number of athletic events in town. This new policy promises to encourage more recreational activities here.
For years, fun runs were organized by individuals, with some volunteer help from local school bus drivers, timers, etc. But a state Department of Transportation requirement that race organizers also provide the state with proof of liability insurance for their events to be held on road rights-of-way put an end to several events.
The borough has expressed willingness to serve as an event sponsor, at least for nonprofits and other community organizations, effectively expanding the shield of borough insurance to events organized by those groups.
Some details may have to be worked out for individuals or private businesses organizing roadside events, but it appears that progress is being made on this important issue.
Bike races and fun runs are great opportunities to get residents outside, participating in fun events with their neighbors.
Removing the insurance hurdle promises to restore some historic events or at least not to discourage new ones.
Bravo to the Haines Borough!
